Mono is looking into the possibility of allowing people to keep some backyard chickens.
A resident of the town emailed officials last month, asking staff to look into this.
The resident was told backyard chickens aren’t allowed at thier current address because it’s zoned “Suburban Residential.”
According to the resident, other municipalities that are close including Orangeville allow up to three hens per household.
The resident also explained the many benefits that come with having chickens at home.
Some of those benefits noted were production of fertilizer for home-gardens, eggs and a “genuinely wholesome experience for children.”
The resident also made clear that they feel while hens are low noise, they understand roosters are not and they believe roosters should remain banned for that reason.
Mono Director of Planning David Tortman, also noted that some nearby municipalities were running trials to allow residents to keep chickens on their property.
Council has now directed the planning committee to draft a policy for council to use when it makes its decision on this and similar requests.
