Dufferin County is embarking on its first-ever Meat Processing Project, designed to bring the county’s farm-to-table system closer to home, with a new facility made for producers, by producers.
To make it happen, they need at least 50 local farmers to commit to utilizing and investing in the new facility – before March 2022.
The proposed meat processing plant would bring the service closer to home, while cultivating a sustainable and thriving agricultural sector in the county.
Local producer Bill McCutcheon says right now farmers are travelling at least 45 minutes away to get the animals processed.
Manager of Economic Development for the County of Dufferin Karisa Downey says they are proposing this as a co-operative facility with 60% of the shares owned by local producers, and the remainder owned by outside investors.
Downey adds the facility would be processing, and they would not have the slaughter component so they would have to partner with an abattoir for the remaining 40%.
They are holding a Public “Meating” on Wednesday December 15th at 1 pm, at the Grand Valley and District Community Centre, to find out more information.
Downey says they are looking to have it going in about 12 months, if approved and supported, and they would be looking to put it in an existing facility.
