Shelburne could help usher in the next age of speed enforcement in Ontario.
A representative from Global Traffic Group was present for Monday nights council meeting to discuss what the company offers.
Using high definition cameras, shooting with a resolution of more than 50 megapixels, they specialize in traffic enforcement.
These cameras are set up at intersection and in other high risk zones with help from local law enforcement.
Once set up, the cameras are calibrated to the speed limit of that zone and will take a high def picture of anybody going over that limit.
The cameras not only capture speeders, but also people running stop signs and red lights.
Mayor Ken Bennington explained that the town has looked into using red light cameras but the cost could exceed $200,000 per intersection.
Global Traffic does not charge for the installation and use of their mobile units up front.
Instead, once an individual commits the violation and pays the fine, it’s split between Global and the Municipality.
The representative said Global is in the business of losing business meaning once they adequately reduce the number of violations, they move on to the next town.
He also said their service will make sure tickets are in the mail within 24-48 hours.
People are able to go online to see the photo or video of their infraction in order to determine weather or not they wish to fight it in court.
This service is already being used in Alberta while legislation in Ontario is still being worked on in order for it to be allowed here.
The Mayor said there’s still some home work to be done to make sure all the proper laws are followed if council decides to use this service.
