Holiday Fire Safety Tips

Shelburne | by Jill Young
Fire Officials say smoking and cooking are the two main causes of fatal fires during the holiday.

Over the holidays there's a big risk for fires and fire departments are hoping people stay safe.

The Ontario Fire Marshal says smoking and cooking are the top two causes of fatal fires during the holidays.

Shelburne Fire Chief Brad Lemaich says always keep a close eye on anything you're cooking.

Fire officials say alcohol is also a factor in many fatal fires.

Lemaich says to make sure you have smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home and around all sleeping areas.

He also says be careful when using candles, and make sure to give real Christmas trees a lot of water.
