56 secondary teachers in the Upper Grand District School Board have been issued layoff notices.
School board officials say timelines outlined in their collective agreements on communicating potential redundancy is the reason for the announcement.
The board says they haven't had to do this since 2003.
Reasons the Upper Grand is in the position they say, is due to declining enrolment, the loss of the Local Priorities Fund, and other funding implications - in particular - losses in provincial revenue.
Significant changes to secondary class size funding is also a factor.
